The Promised Holy Spirit Given

Acts 2:1-13                         click here for audio

The text before us stands very tall. Taller than the Rocky Mountains. It has gigantic  heights, and it has great depths. It plunges deeper than the deepest regions of the vast oceans.  Here we see the POWER AND PRESENCE of almighty God in sending Himself in the Person of the Holy Spirit, or if you PREFER the sound of the Old English,  “the Holy Ghost”.    The Lord Jesus Christ has descended upon His followers,  the Holy Dove of Heaven has come to be in them to  DWELL in them;  to Abide WITH them; and to Empower them to be the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Already we saw in chapter 1 –  the Disciples – WAITING for the Holy Spirit  (1:4)  “not to depart from Jerusalem…wait for…”

NOW in chapter 2 –   the COMING of the Holy Spirit

In chapter 1 –  Jesus taught the Disciples; prepared them;  and Equipped them for His service

In chapter 2 –  they are EMPOWERED for the Lord’s Service..

1:8  “you shall receive power after that the Holy Spirit…”

In chapter 1 —  the Believers are Held Back

In chapter 2—they are SENT Forth in the Power of the Spirit

The 2nd chapter –  3 main divisions –

1)   The Giving of the Holy Spirit –  vv.1-13

2)   The Explaining of the Holy Spirit – vv.14-36

3)   The Receiving of the Gift of the Holy Spirit  vv.37-47

For our time this morning –   The Promised Holy Spirit is GIVEN.

  1. The Significance of Pentecost        v.1

When the day of Pentecost arrived   (fully come)…

Very important day…. The events of this day were predicted by Jesus…. SEE John 7:37-39;    John 14:16-17,26;  16:7

Pentecost – is a Greek word for a Jewish Feast,   called in Scriptures  “Feast of Weeks”   or  “Feast of Harvest” (Lev. 23:15)       Feast of Weeks…..weeks of seven  …seven weeks.. after another FEAST —  Feast of First Fruits…  and before that Feast was the Feast of Passover…  (let’s look at these…)

Feast of Passover….  Exodus 12  …took a lamb…blood on doorpost…roast the lamb. Eat the lamb…left Egypt in a mighty deliverance by God…  Jesus is our Passover Lamb (1Cor. 5:7 Christ our Passover)

Feast of First Fruits… the day AFTER Passover…feast of unleavened bread…..  first fruits…celebrating the coming harvest…1Cor 15:20 Christ is the first fruits of those who sleep

FEAST of WEEKS,  or FEAST of HARVEST…  50 days after Feast of First Fruits……   Pentecost  “fiftieth”

Jesus rose from the dead on EASTER… spend time with disciples 40 days….. ASCENDED…..  10 days later…PENTECOST..   50 days after the Resurrection….

Feast of Weeks, or Feast of Harvest —  2 loaves of Bread…LEAVEN….      Remember feast of first fruits “unleaven”

LEAVEN –  yeast…makes bread rise…   type of sin….  Jesus NO SIN…

Feast of Harvest –2 loaves   (leaven)  Sin in the church…we are not like Christ in that we are  “sinless”

DAY OF PENTECOST  “fully come”     “arrived”   It’s true purpose had come to fulfillment…

What was given in OT  in types and shadows—come to its true reality….  IT’S PURPOSE ONLY DEMONSTRATED IN A FEAST..NOW  FULLY COME….IT’S DAY HAS ARRIVED…

That purpose =    2 main things

(1) The baptism of the Holy Spirit  (see Acts 1:5)

(2) The birthday of the church   (BY THE WAY…the baptism of the Holy Spirit  came as a sovereign act of God…it came according to God’s time table….  The disciples did not have to meet certain conditions… or even pray for it to come… it came as God planned it….

I say that…..some Christian groups teach…. You have to pray and ask for the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be given….  NO WHERE in scriptures…   ask for the baptism of the Holy Spirit…..

The Holy Spirit’s baptism  has ARRIVED….

Just as sure as the benefits of Calvary and the Cross has ARRIVED….  don’t have to ask for another event of Jesus dying on the Cross to purchase salvation…..don’t have to ask God for another event of Pentecost to send the promise of the Holy Spirit…

The Cross of Christ has purchased a great salvation…we just need to receive what’s been given for God’s people.

Pentecost has fully come…it has arrived with a full Holy Spirit’s baptism…we just need to enjoy the rivers of living water that Jesus has sent for every believer.

NOTICE:    they were all together in one place

How many?     Acts 1:15    “120”     not sure exactly what place…could have been the same place where of Lord’s Supper…  It’s probably the UPPER ROOM…    large enough for 120…

Lord’s Supper – they were all together —  benediction of the Lord’s Earthly Ministry

Pentecost—-they were all together — commencement of the Lord’s Heavenly Ministry and Earthly ministry through Holy Spirit

  1. The Symbols of Pentecost vv.2-4

Suddenly…. There was SOMETHING to SEE;     Something to HEAR….

What did they hear?

Sound like mighty rushing wind – sound of tornado, hurricane,  no wind…they did not FEEL the wind…nothing was blowing around…..SOUND…. like the sound of hurricane….as some say…the sound of locomotive…….the sound of a rushing mighty wind….

Sound so powerful,  so forceful…  it got people’s attention…people outside the house   (see v.6)

Isn’t that what’s so much needed in our day?    The powerful sound of the Holy Spirit ?    The sound from Heaven that pierces the deaf ears that are deaf to the things of God.

Religion can make a lot of noises.  But that’s all it is…noise.. What’s needed today are Spirit anointed people who like Elijah can be so bold to make fun of the prophets of Baal…and say “cry louder to your false god….maybe he’s on a trip, or asleep and needs to wake up…(1Kings 18).   There’s no voice,  no sound from dead false gods,

THE SOUNDS of PENTECOST —  there’s something going on…

Something important is happening..

Something powerful is happening..

Something divine is happening…

This is the WIND that blows to bring salvation to the LOST>

Jesus said:

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”  (John 3:8)

This WIND –  you can’t work it up in the power of the flesh.  You can’t manipulate it…..   you can’t put this wind in your denominational box …..IT CAN’T BE BOXED UP…    IT BLOWS WHERE IT PLEASES….

What did they SEE?

v.3   divided tongues,  cloven tongues   “as of fire”   NOT fire, but it looked like tongues of fire…

The symbol is telling us something –

Divided tongues —  large fire…  and from this large fire is divided small portions that rested upon each one of them..

It’s not a real fire…gave the appearance of fire….

Divided —  rested on each one of them—   this baptism of the Holy Spirit –  is for each person individually….  You don’t receive salvation as a group, but as individuals….   You don’t receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit in a group, but individually.

THINK of Jesus…when he was baptized in water….. the Holy Spirit came upon him…in the form of a dove….rested upon Jesus….and in the Power of the Spirit…he ministered to others, and did the will of the Father….

Likewise….  The Holy Spirit comes upon each one of the believers individually…

AND the purpose…  see ACTS 1:8    “witnesses”

Maybe that’s the meaning of “tongues”…. God will use our tongues to be used to “speak for Christ…be His witnesses”   and it means…we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God   (v.11)

Clarification of  what John the Baptist said

Matthew 3:11-12

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Either a person will be saved…. they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit upon conversion……OR

They will be baptized with fire –  which is the final judgment…

Either a person will be eternally saved, or eternally lost.

Baptized into Christ by the Spirit, or

Forever experience a baptism of fire in the Lake of Fire

Matthew 3:12  explains what is meant…

Either you are the WHEAT—  saved

Or CHAFF–  left to be burned with unquenchable fire.

2 Thess 1:7-9

and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Our God is a consuming Fire.

Fire –  represents judgment,  but it also pictures the work of the Holy Spirit…

There is the purifying work of the Holy Spirit;  the sanctifying work…burning out the impurities…

Illuminating work of the Spirit…. as fire gives light…. piercing the darkness;   bringing the gospel of Christ, the Light of the World  dispelling the darkness  and giving light of the glorious gospel to those who are lost.

The Warmth of a Fire….is so welcomed especially during these cold days….  The Holy Spirit gives warmth….  Heats up the spirit of the Christian…

Lukewarm Christiantiy won’t do…    Jesus said…”I rather you be either HOT or COLD….I will vomit out those who are lukewarm..”  Reveleation 3

What did they say?

v.4   they began to speak

1Cor 14:22  a sign to unbelievers

That this is from God.

Moses / Pharoah….signs  to let Pharoah and Egypt know this is from God…   (JUDGMENT CAME on EGYPT)

Isaiah 28:11  For by people of strange lips
and with a foreign tongue
the Lord will speak to this people,

Jeremiah 5:15

Behold, I am bringing against you
a nation from afar, O house of Israel,
declares the Lord.
It is an enduring nation;
it is an ancient nation,
a nation whose language you do not know,
nor can you understand what they say.

JUDGMENT CAME – Exile–   Assyrians came…  Babylonians came….

To Unbelieving Jews…. The speaking in tongues…different languages….  JUDGMENT  CAME  –   70 AD  ROMANS Came

  1. The Shock of Pentecost vv.5-13

See words like

  • Bewildered v.6
  • Amazed and astonished v.7
  • Amazed and perplexed v.12

This was shocking to them  –  are not all these who are speaking Galileans?   8  And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language?

We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God

These were Jews from other places outside of Palestine….outside of the area of Jerusalem……they had come to celebrate Pentecost…the feast of WEEKS, or Feast of Harvest

They are hearing something shocking….never before had they heard the WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD… declared in the language from which they came from….When these Jews who were from distant regions worshipped in their own synagogues, they heard synagogue services in the Hebrew, or Aramaic language.

Shocking thing to hear–   what they normally hear in Hebrew, they were now hearing in the language of where they are from.   In the pagan country from which they came,  no one spoke good things about God;  no one spoke in the language of Parthians and Medes and Elamites, Cappadocia…glorious things of God’s Works and God’s Attributes,

They were startled by what they heard…This was STRANGE…

This arrested their attention – they were asking questions

What does this mean?

Religious Jews,  devout Jews  who had no interest….and were even involved in the crucifixion of Jesus…..now some of them are asking  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Here’s the good news?   Some of them were asking sincerely, because they wanted to know the answer to what was going on downtown in Jerusalem among 120 other Jewish people.

They are going to find out.    Peter will stand and address them. He will give an explanation of what’s going on.

The results will be shocking.   Many will come to repentance and faith in the one they crucified;  They will find out….the carpenter’s son – is really  God’s Son…

They will find out…that the Nazarene called Jesus  is at the right hand of God interceding for all who call upon him in faith..

Here’s something else  that’s shocking…

v.13  But others mocking…..  they are filled with new wine…

mocking…they are drunk…It’s only 9:00 o’clock…they are drinking fresh wine…new wine…. And getting drunk on it…

Words of mockery!

Someone said… “nothing shocks me anymore…”

The mockery, the unbelief,  the depravity of the human heart can manifest itself in some shocking ways!

People are doing things;  living in ways that is pure mockery in the face of a holy God.

God has given the Holy Spirit.

He is not to be grieved,  rejected, and stubbornly refused.

I pray we will be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
