Seven Miles With Jesus

Luke 24:13-32                         click here for audio

Our message today is about “getting the facts straight”.     “Getting the story straight”

Jesus died on Friday…..   there have been visits to his tomb early Sunday….

Women went early to the tomb—  NOT TO SEE A RISEN LORD…   but to anoint his deceased body with spices…… the loving thing to do….honor your friend….

NO BODY…     don’t miss v.3  “LORD  Jesus”

v.3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus

LUKE—who writes this Gospel…..MAKE IT CLEAR….  GET OUR STORY STRAIGHT…

Notice  “Lord”  Jesus;    it does not read   “the body of Jesus” ;

It’s not “the body of the dead Jesus”   ….   “body of the crucified Jesus;    but rather,

“the body of the LORD JESUS”     God raised him from the dead and has made him LORD.

Peter preached the Resurrection of Jesus in that powerful sermon at Pentecost –  Acts 2:32   “This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses….. (goes on and says)    v.36  “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ,  this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Let all the house of Israel therefore KNOW FOR CERTAIN….

At first, they did not know………AT first, they did not believe………..

  • The women not looking for a resurrection
  • At the tomb…. They were met by angels… He is NOT Here;  He’s risen   (READ vv.6-8)…THEY REMEMBERED HIS WORDS………  THE WOMEN were reminded of the WORDS of Jesus….they were confronted FIRST with the angelic messengers who rehearsed   what Jesus had said to them while he was still in Galilee
  • AFTER This experience of “remembering his words”…..THEY then meet Jesus on the road back from the tomb….(get this from other Gospel writers)
  • They return and told all these things to the apostles…v.9 to the eleven and to all the rest.
  • JOHN 20:18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples  “I have seen the Lord”
  • Their reaction – v.11   “but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them”

The MEN…  the apostles…  they did not believe….   Peter  v.12  he had visited the tomb and saw the linen cloths…  Marveling at what had happened…  still processing all of this….  He needs to get the story straight in his head……  THAT’S WHERE WE LEFT off  LAST TIME…..

Our focus today —   two of the men—  they are not APOSTLES…..    don’t know them…   one name – Cleopas

WALKING home  from Jerusalem….  Passover events are over….. 7 mile trip back home…as they walk…  a stranger will walk alongside of them…. It’s Jesus….but they will not know it’s  Jesus…. FOR SEVEN MILES…these two unknown Bible characters will be exposed to the best BIBLE teaching possible….    SEVEN MILES WITH JESUS  will change their lives forever!

Let’s begin in

v.13    Emmaus —  unknown–  even today— no one knows its location….

v.14   TALKING with each other………… about all these things…..  had happened..

vv.15-16    Jesus…  drew near…..went with them        (common practice)   everybody walked…

their  EYES  kept from recogn  him.         In some way…either…his glorified state…  one thing he was not dazzling like the angels….causing them to be afraid…….looked human…  nothing else to indicate he had some glow….  Halo over head….           JESUS WOULD NOT ALLOW THEM TO KNOW WHO HE WAS….at least ….NOT at First…

SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE SAID  —  there will be 11 post Resurrection appearances of the Lord….and this one demonstrates the condescension of our Lord….   Jesus came into the world as a baby…took upon himself flesh….dwelt among us,  we beheld his glory says the Apostle John…he condescended from the glorious heights of Heaven….came down to our lowly estate…..  JESUS COULD HAVE  CHOSEN TO APPEAR….   Temple….among the masses of people….    Showed himself  before Pilate…. Go through the walls….   NO>>>>>>>>>>>>>    chose to reveal himself    UNKNOWN  followers….

God has chosen what is foolish;  what is weak;  God chose what is low and despised….so no human being might boast in the presence of God    (1Cor. 1:26-31)

First – he asked questions   (not because he didn’t know the answer….he wanted to teach them )

Asking questions –  is a method in teaching….illiciting from the learner responses…that will guide them to further understanding…this is the beginning of a Bible Study

v.17    what is this conversation…as you walk..………….they stood still, looking sad

Why is Jesus  withholding His identiy?    Why not  end the  “sadness”?

Jesus will do just that…  but first  Jesus wants to help them with something that will be beneficial for the long term….  He will bring them to the Scriptures….   Give them preaching material to personally benefit from …..AND    help others….    If he discloses his identity…the emotional response…. Would detract from What He is going to say to them….

v.18    CLEOPAS….  (probably Luke’s source for this account….and of course Holy Spirit….)are you the ONLY visitor to Jerusalem…. Does NOT know….

v.19   “what things?”

concerning Jesus of Nazareth………..was a prophet    “was”    past tense…   they believe it was all over…. They were sad….their hopes were dashed;  dreams were crushed….

Mighty in deed and word—   mighty in what he   “did”   miracles,  healings,  raised the dead,       mighty in what he    “said”      no man spoke like this man….     Matt.5-7   spoke with authority and not as the scribes..

…… he was confirmed of his mighty deeds and words by   GOD the Father –    this is my beloved Son in  Whom…  baptism  / transfig..

……he was confirmed of his mighty deeds and words by the PEOPLE….   Nothing done in secret….

v.20   OUR chief priests….delivered him up…   no blame on Roman soldiers…they were only the executioners….  Remember Roman authorities..Pilate wanted to release him…found no fault…

v.21   we had hoped    “had”           not only were they sad….  With no joy…   they had no hope.

Hope —   “he was the one to redeem Israel”         NOT    “he is the one”       “he WAS the one..”

They were looking for Jesus to be the Messiah to REDEEM  Israel  politically,     redeem Israel nationally…  to rise in power over the Romans….  Set up his kingdom…

They were looking for a kingdom redemption….

But …..its the 3rd  day  since all this has happened….  It’s over….   There’s nothing to look forward to…

Some of the women amazed us with a story……visited the tomb…body was gone…   seeing a vision of angels…. Saying he was alive….but some of our men …went to the tomb…did not see Jesus

PROBLEM with these men…   v.11   but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them…..

1st problem…  sad… no joy

2nd problem… had hoped…   no hope

3rd problem… did not believe….  No faith…

JESUS….has not yet disclosed to them  HIS IDENTITY.   In fact…he will never tell them who he is….they will eventually figure it out….

What Jesus does….  He points them to the real source of their problem      v.25

It’s a mild rebuke….  V.25   O foolish ones,  and slow of hearts to believe  all that the prophets have spoken !

The reason for their sadness……  the reason for  their hopelessness……their faithlessness….

They were selective in what they wanted to believe in the scriptures…..    Jesus didn’t say they were slow of hearts to believe the prophets’ message….  BUT  they were slow of hearts to believe  ALL that the prophets have spoken!

How important is that?    How important is it to  BELIEVE ALL God’s Word?

Romans 10:9-10

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

You MUST believe that God raised Jesus from the dead  TO  BE   SAVED !

A person may be straight in their theology  …believe in everything in the Bible…except this one point…. deny this ONE TRUTH that salvation is in CHRIST ALONE…and be eternally lost and condemned to hell.

v.26    Was it not necessary……. SUFFER……… HIS GLORY??????

PROBLEM —  they wanted the glory,  but not the suffering…..  the disciples followed Jesus because they had hoped to  sit on either side of him and  REIGN with him….   Even after his resurrection the disciples asked Jesus   “will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”      they had hoped Jesus would have  REDEEM  Israel   politically  and  nationally……a saving redemption is NOT what they had in mind..

So  Jesus NOW  takes them on a tour through the scriptures…..      REMEMBER they still don’t know who this visitor is…..  to them he’s  a   STRANGER

v.27   And beginning with Moses…..

What do you think Jesus said?      What Old Testament verses did he bring up?

Bible verses might have been————

Genesis 3:15 –   Messiah – is the wounded seed of the woman who crushes the serpent’s head

Adam/Eve…God killed an animal….provided a covering…  The Messiah is that covering…He was sacrificed…

Noah – Ark–  the Lord Jesus is the ARK of Safety—-

Gen 22 –  Abraham and Isaac…..   offer up Isaac as a sacrifice…..  The Angel of the Lord…stopped… RAM caught in a thicket….   Picture of jesus…  substitute for sinners…

Ex. 12 –  the Passover Lamb —     the Messiah is that Lamb

Ex.17 / Numbers 20–  Moses strikes the ROCK…  out comes water…    Jesus is that Rock…smitten and by his death… the blood that was shed….  Water of life  for thirsty sinners…

Deut 18:15     Jesus is the prophet that is like Moses

Psalm 22      My God My God why have you….   Ps. 22  speaks of Jesus who will be on the cross and his bones will be out of joint;   hands and feet pierced…

Isaiah 50:6  “I gave my back to those who strike;  and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.”

Isaiah 53   vivid description of the crucifixion of Jesus

He was despised and rejected by men,     a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces     he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs     and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken,     smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions;     he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,     and with his wounds we are healed.

vv.28-29    urged him strongly….”stay with us”

v.30   took bread…. Something familiar about how he brok the bread….and blessed it… his prayer…very familiar to his disciples who had witnessed Jesus doing this….

v.31  eyes opened—   recognized him….vanished from their sight…

v.32  did not our hearts burn…..opened to us the Scriptures.

What did they learn?    What were they convinced of?

#1 – Jesus is ALIVE!

#2 – Scriptures – the Word of God  is   ALIVE !

Why didn’t Jesus just quickly reveal who He was  ….immediately  out there  on the Road?

He wanted their faith to be planted –   not in an appearance, but in the scriptures…this IS NOT making light of His appearance at all…..       we will never travel seven miles with Jesus down the road to Emmaus….  Our faith is not in seeing Jesus as they saw him… but our faith is in the

SCRIPTURES…..     to be saved…. We are not required to see Jesus  as we walk down a dusty road…

Romans 10:9

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

THESE MEN —  were given the scriptures FIRST….  Then they saw Jesus

Like the women…. First they were given GOD”S MESSAGE….  Angels reminded them of what Jesus had said to them…. And they remembered his words……  THEN they SAW   Jesus!

The women  and men…. The followers of Christ

They were once SAD…   they were once with no hope…..  they were once with no faith…

Now…they have joy, hope and faith…  the source is Christ…  the  WORD of GOD!

Romans 10:17

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Notice their response — v.32    Did not our hearts burn within us…..

Nothing about… didn’t our hearts burn as we saw him vanish out of our sight…..  It’s no doubt we were not hallucinating….. we were not seeing visions….. we are not going crazy…..

We have something…we can go back to over and over again….the Scriptures….the inspired Word of God….

There are about  11  Resurrection appearances of the Lord Jesus to his followers….

He will confirm to them….  There’s no trickery,  there’s nothing fake hear….

You hear today….about  fake news…. This is no fake…this is the good news… the gospel..

…they will see him again  before he ascends…

And we hope to look at this more later…

The source of our joy, hope, and faith is in  THUS SAITH the LORD….

Many people  are  addicted to   the pleasures of this world… which will give some sense of joy, but it’s a limited joy….

The world offers some hope…. But it’s a limited hope….it’s a fading joy….. a fading hope…..

Eternal Joy is found only in Christ….it’s for this life and the life to come….

Jesus said….

John 15:11  11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.       1John 1:4  And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

Jesus vanished from their sight –  and in a few days  He ascended back to heaven—but He left them His Word…the Bible  and He sent back the Holy Spirit…  and he left us a mission –  the Great Commission – to proclaim His Gospel throughout the world

At end of chapter—  they had  “great joy”       source –Jesus   “worshipped him”     v.45  “then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures”…     There’ s  more to look at  before we finish Luke’s Gospel…
