Arguments in Favor of the Resurrection                                   click here for audio

Luke 24:1-12

Luke, chapter 24 is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The greatest event in all of history.  We’ve studied together the trials, the sufferings, and the crucifixion of our Lord;  The climax is His resurrection from the dead.   All 4 gospel writers  (Matthew, Mark, John and as we see here LUKE)—they all cover the account of His resurrection.

To get the full picture –  you have to see what’s presented in all  FOUR GOSPELS.

Luke doesn’t tell us everything.   For His purpose in writing, He gives what we need;  He writes what the Holy Spirit inspired him to write.

One thing we SEE in all 4 gospels is the fact that Jesus died.  HE WAS For CERTAIN DEAD!    That’s critical because if there’s no death,  there’s no resurrection.

Another FACT we see in all 4 gospels is that after 3 days on Sunday morning –  the TOMB WAS FOUND TO BE EMPTY!

Then  we see in all 4 gospels that it was women who went about giving testimony that Jesus had been raised from the dead.

Then the final thing we see – in all 4 gospels –   we see how the disciples,  the men chose NOT to believe the testimony of the women.  They didn’t believe it.

THERE IS ONE IMPORTANT THING  that’s not given here in luke… and it’s not given in Matthew, Mark, or John as well…  and that is–  the actual Resurrection!  No one saw it happened.   No one records the EVENT itself.      The fact that it took place was obvious;  but no one records that they, or anyone else were  eyewitnesses of the resurrection of Christ.    No one saw Jesus come out of the tomb,  but the disciples came to believe that HE DID.

This is what we want to think on this morning –the FACTS supporting the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.–  the STRONG, Powerful ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR OF THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST!

Let’s look at the first one –  in vv. 1-3    (read vv.1-3)

  1. The Empty Tomb

“they”  went to the tomb –  WHO are the  “THEY” ?     see  v.55 in prev chap

v.56 they returned and prepared spices and ointments—  this is what you did to honor your deceased loved one… they did not practice embalming…..  the fragrant spices and sweet smelling ointments  served to cover up the foul smell that eventually came as the body began to decompose.

The women ran out of time on Friday… because at 6pm…began the Sabbath…. Such adornment of a corpse would be work, and considere defilement on the Sabbath.   They waited for the Sabbath to end…they came very early Sunday morning…

The women included Mary Magdalene,  Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, and other women who had come from Galilee as they followed Jesus.

IMPORTANT –   not coming to the tomb to see the Resurrection;  or to find an EMPTY TOMB—

  1. a) On the way— they were discussing  “Who will move the stone for us?”   .massive stone…MARK 16:3     These women were there FRIDAY when Jesus was placed in the tomb; It was Joseph of Arimathea…who had the stone rolled in front of the entrance to tomb
  2. b) WOMEN – did not know about the ROMAN Guards;  MATTHEW 27:62  “that imposter said ‘after 3 days rise again;  order the tomb to be secured until the 3rd day… Pilate- you have a guard of soldiers’   sealed….
  3. c) By time – the women GOT THERE- no Roman soldiers –  no conversations,  GUARDS GONE!   WHY?   EARTHQUAKE (MATTHEW 28)   angel descended from heaven came and rolled back the stone and sat on it….appearance like lightning…clothing like snow…guards trembled and became like dead men…  passed out….came to… must have looked in…no body…no need to stay….leave to tell the Jewish leaders what had happened…
  4. d) BACK to the Women…
  5. e) NOT expecting to see STONE ROLLED AWAY… it’s already removed…..did not see guards
  6. f) NOT expecting a resurrection
  7. g) Mary Magdalene – out paced the other women…she got there first…LOOK at JOHN 20

John 20

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

Mary Magdalene does NOT see Jesus at this time….she only sees that the tomb’s stone has been rolled away…. She quickly goes to see Peter & John

Peter and John come to the tomb….JOHN 20:3-8      John outran peter…does not go in… Peter catches us…goes right on in… they saw the linen cloths lying there…. And the face cloth (v.7)

And John  (other disciple) went in…HE SAW AND BELIEVED

  • PETER and JOHN ….see the empty tomb– JOHN is convinced….   Peter is still thinking it through
  • WOMEN – see the empty tomb—
  • SOLDIERS– see the empty tomb-   MATTHEW 28 – tell Jewish leaders—  told their experience…..  earthquake… brilliant light… angel…..  Jewish leaders  DID NOT DENY IT….they paid SOLDIERS to MAKE up a LIE….  “disciples stole the body…to this day”

TWO MEN  (often angels appeared as men)     dazzling apparel

v.5   women were frightened  …..realized they were in the presence of heavenly beings…angelic beings…

v.5  angels spoke  “why do you seek the living among the dead?  V.6   He is not here, but has risen

bowed their faces to the ground—-    this is NOT the PLACE TO WORSHIP—   WHY DO YOU SEEK THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD?

  • WE DON’T GATHER AROUND A MONUMENT TO A DEAD PERSON— THE EARLY CHURCH…did not celebrate the Lord Jesus….around a tomb……why?    He’s not DEAD!
  • We worship on the FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK (v.1)     because Saturday (Sabbath)  Jesus is still in the tomb…  He arose on Sunday!    Early church met on Sunday!
  • We have the angelic message— which is a DIVINE MESSAGE– straight from God—delivered to us by ANGELS….   He is Risen!
  • Vv.6-7 Remember how he told you….  LUKE 9:22  “the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

Luke 18:31-34

31 And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.” 34 But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

2 powerful arguments for the Resurrection of Christ –   (1) empty tomb  -only explanation, is that which is given in the Gospel records …..     (2) Message from the angels–  confirming what the Lord had previously predicted would happen….   He is NOT here…He is risen… just like He said…

v.8  we come to a third powerful argument for the resurrection of Christ….    And they remembered his words.    It begins to sink in…   it’s coming together….

v.9 and returning…..told all these things…………     the angelic message…. The divine message  NOW becomes their message….   The testimony of angels…the testimony of God….the testimony of Christ himself….becomes the testimony of these women.

So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

iT’S  to these WOMEN – Jesus appeared–  and first gives the honor and priviledge of telling others ..HE’s ALIVE!

Why the women?    They saw it all.     It was women who were near the cross…only women except for John….   It was these same women  who witnessed his burial….  They saw him being laid in the tomb…   they were the first to visit the tomb….

v.10 Now it was Mary Magdalene  and Joanna  and Mary the mother of James and the other women..

How did Mary Magdalene get in this group of eyewitnesses?    Remember she came first to the tomb..outwalked the other ladies… sees STONE rolled away…doesn’t even look in, but goes back to Bethany to find Peter and John….while she’s gone…the other women come to the tomb…have the encounter with the angels…. And on their way back they meet Jesus….

But Mary Magdalene comes back ….. after Peter and John have come to the empty tomb and left…in John 20:11…Mary Magdalene returns to the tomb…she still thinks someone has stolen the body….she’s  weeping….. She stoops to look into the tomb….sees two angels in white….one at the head…feet

LOOK and Review   JOHN 20:11-18                     returns…I’ve seen the Lord…repeats what Jesus had said to her..

All the women…said the same thing….He is Risen… we’ve seen him…

  1. The Unbelief of the Men vv.11-12

v.11  They did NOT believe them;

How is it that this is a STRONG Argument  in FAVOR of the Resurrection of Christ????

Remember the lie that was created by the Jewish leaders?    That the disciples had stolen the body of the Lord and made it appeared to be a resurrection?

Why would the disciples make up a story of the resurrection?   They were NOT Expecting Christ to rise again!

If the disciples were part of a cover-up ….stealing the body of Jesus….and when the women returned and said… we’ve seen the Lord!    We’ve seen the Lord!     The men would say….  “yes, we know…He has risen….”    But they did not chime in…and go along with the women…their words seemed to them an idle tale,  and they did not believe them….

Peter and John is not here at this time….  They had gone home…  they are a part of the ELEVEN v.9 who heard the testimony of the women =   Eleven = apostles =    Peter/John heard what Mary Magdalene had said….  Peter/John run to the tomb…  John 20  better chronology…  John looks sees the linen cloths…  believes…  Peter what does he do??   See v.12

v.12 But Peter

Peter is still thinking it through….  Went home marveling at what had happened….

Peter did not see angels like women did;     As of now,  He hasn’ t  seen Jesus….  But he will…

And all the disciples will see him

See that next time….

One day …we will see Jesus

1John 3:2-3

Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

We continue in our worship of Christ….as we remember what He did on our behalf…

He gave His body on the Cross….    His blood purchased the salvation for all the redeemed!
